The idea of selling a matching set of irons began in the 1920s; before that time, even though groups of four or five irons resembling each other were available, the golfer usually assembled a set of irons by selecting individual clubs based on personal preference, often from various makers.

As the 1920s continued to roar, and the game continued to grow in popularity, golf club manufactures (Spalding, MacGregor, Tom Stewart and George Nicoll to name a few) began offering six or seven irons that matched in a set. These matched sets gained momentum with golfers and golf companies alike, and eventually became the numbered sets of irons golfers utilize today.

Our matched set of Precision hickory-shafted irons is modeled from an original 7-piece set of George Nicoll irons. The set includes a Mid Iron, Mid Mashie, Mashie Iron, Mashie, Pitching Mashie, Mashie Niblick, and Niblick (see table below). The face scoring matches the Nicoll set with dot punches giving the irons the authentic look and playability you expect from Louisville Golf. The irons come with a solid hickory shaft turned in Louisville, KY to our exacting specifications. Each shaft is graded and inspected; only the best shafts make it to this set.

These irons are duplicates of an original set of Stewart irons produced late in the hickory era.  They are one of the most playable irons of the hickory era. The weight in the head is concentrated low and in the sole. This helps to more easily launch the ball. The soles are wider which prevents the head from digging in. This is really important on today’s softer golf courses, allowing for a margin of error when striking the ball.  At the time of assembly each shaft is graded, inspected, and finally frequency matched for consistent performance.

SM56 Niblick

Bobby Jones would have never won thirteen major titles, including the Grand Slam, without the tutelage of his first instructor, Stewart Maiden. Jones admitted: "The best luck I ever had in golf was when Stewart Maiden came from Carnoustie (Scotland) to be the professional at East Lake (Jones’ home course in Atlanta, Georgia)." Jones copied Maiden's unique style, a style Maiden spent years developing in his native Scotland, where he also studied club design under the expert clubsmiths of the “auld country.” The game of golf, and the equipment it is played with, would not be where it is today without the guidance of Stewart Maiden.

Our Stewart Maiden Niblick was replicated from an original club designed by Maiden for Hillerich & Bradsby (H&B, based in Louisville, KY) and will guide you to better shots around the greens. The club first appeared in the 1932 H&B product line catalog. Arriving late in the hickory era, the Stewart Maiden Niblick is a large head with a wide-flanged sole; it has a unique dot-patterned face and resembles a modern wedge with its size and playability. It has a good amount of bounce on the sole making it one of the easiest models from the Hickory Era to play from the sand.

This iron is a playable replica of the Hillerich & Bradsby Lo-Skore Niblick from the mid 1920’s. The Flanged Niblick design is much easier to hit on today’s soft courses - the flange preventing the club from digging into the turf, for a larger margin of error on the shot.

Ben Sayers did not like the shape of the Mashie Niblick , so he asked Tom Stewart to make him a club that looked like a mashie but had the loft of the mashie niblick. This club became know as the Benny and ended up as a club of 38 degrees to replace the Spade Mashie and fill the gap between the mashie and the mashie niblick. Our Benny is an exact replica of that Tom Stewart club. With 38 degrees of loft it is similar to a modern #8 iron.
